New Year's Eve

We had a quiet celebration for the New Year at our home with the Cook family. We ate chili and gingerbread cake, the cousins banged pots and pans together outside at 7:30 pm, and everyone was in bed by 8:30 pm. How's that for a Happy New Year's party?!!

This is how similar we celebrated Y2K ten years ago: Grammy and Grampy had just bought this house and we had a quiet celebration here with them, Greg and Sara (who were both single), and our small family of Jono, 18 month-old Bud, and me. Look how young we all were! I'm sure our celebration lasted a little longer then, but probably not by much!

St. George

We had fun escaping the freezing weather in Salt Lake during our weekend getaway to St. George. We took Jen F. with us; it was her first time staying in the St. George house and she was so excited! The sun was shining and the kids had a great time riding their scooters outside.

Bud, Rosie, Coleman and Jen F. also enjoyed swimming in the indoor pool. The outdoor pool was just too much of a temptation for Jono, however, and he threw a protesting Bud in! There was ice on the ground surrounding the pool and I'm sure the water was ice cold. Jono also threw Rosie in (a little more gently than he threw Bud). Coleman didn't want to be left out of the excitement and he started to climb into the pool by himself; but just one little foot in the water made him quickly change his mind! I captured the whole thing on my camcorder, take a look at the end of this post.

While in St. George, Urban Meyer resigned from Florida then changed his mind and promised to return after a "leave of absence". We agree with Stan Van Gundy's assessment that Urban just decided to take the spring game off. Needless to say, the whole episode was very interesting to watch unfold. Jono and I still had our Saturday date-night at the Claim Jumper while Jennifer and the kids watched G-Force. It's so fun to be in St. George, thanks Grammy and Grampy!

Christmas Day

Christmas is my favorite day of the year, and my kids' favorite day. We discussed the schedule the night before, and decided to not be such a hurry to open presents. "Sleep in!" Jono and I told them. Bud and Rosie were very concerned that Santa would put all the presents under the tree in the foyer, but they didn't want to open presents in there. They preferred to be in the family room by the fire. Jono assured them that Santa would leave the presents where ever they wanted.

Christmas morning Bud, of course, was the first one up. He waited patiently for the other two to wake up. Rosie woke up next and rearranged all the presents that Santa had so carefully and neatly placed on the fireplace ledge. Finally Coleman woke up. By then, Jono and I had showered and were ready for a great day.

We take turns opening presents in our family, and it was so fun to see the excitement and surprise on the kids' faces, especially Coleman! He also loved passing out the presents to everyone. Bud got a Utah bedspread, a Utah golfshirt and t-shirt, mini helmut, a lego kit, nerf gun, a box of recess's and money for his bank account. Rosie got a watch, a crystal-growing kit, a bird house, a jewelry box to paint and decorate, a candy dispenser, pixos, and money for her bank account. Coleman got a lite-brite, a nerf gun, bakugons, friut-by-the-foot, number and letter stickers, and money for his bank account. Isn't it obvious their dad is a banker! The kids also got a zhu-zhu house, wheel and ball to share.

It's obvious that Coleman is growing up. Instead of charming Thomas the Tank Engine trains, his bokugon toys are "Battle Brawlers" with names like "Shades of Death". I also realized that I never took Coleman to sit on Santa's lap. I am such a bad mom!

After presents, Jono made up a delicious breakfast with ham, eggs, potatoes, a breakfast cake from Leslie's bakery and hot chocolate in the mugs I got from my Grandma Mimi. Then, Jen F. came over and opened her presents. Fun, fun!

Later in the afternoon, we were so lonesome for our extended family, especially Grammy and Grampy! They always spent Christmas Day at our house. So, instead of sitting around, we jumped in the car and drove to St. George for a weekend getaway.

That's is our Christmas 2009!

The Night Before Christmas

We had a wonderful Christmas Eve dinner and family time at Greg and Andrea's house this year. We missed the Cook family who were blessed to spend a week in Pittsburgh with our favoite Mission President and his wife!

We had a yummy turkey dinner and then watched the Nativity that Greg had recorded a month earlier. (All the grandkids acted out the Nativity so that we could give Grammy and Grampy a DVD for Christmas). If you have time, please watch it on my brother Greg's blog. It is so special! It is always chaotic putting the costumes on the kids and getting them to cooperate, but the magic of editing makes it look perfect. We just might just defer to the DVD from now on!

Then, we played a fun game while reading "T'was the Night Before Christmas". Just as we were finishing the games, some of the grandkids heard bells and there was a loud knocking at the door. Who could it be? Santa left each grandchild a gift on the doorstep, which they all tore open at the same time. Zhu-zhu pets for all! Even big-boy Bud was soon enchanted by the chattering hampsters who moved sporatically all around. Someone took the time to read the instructions, which warned "keep away from hair". Not long after Macy was crying hysterically, the zhu-zhu was stuck in her hair! After a quick fix from the attorney, all was well. The adults got to visit while the children all played happily.

Merry Christmas to all, and to all a good night!

Getting Ready for Santa

I decided to give cookies this year for neighbor gifts, and thought a couple batches should be enough. Seven batches of pumkin and sugar cookies later, I was cookie-ed out! The kids put on their Santa hats and cheerfully helped me deliver all those cookies.

The kids loved making cookies for Santa. Rosie choose to use a state of Utah shaped cookie cutter with the blue Great Salt Lake and a red dot to represent SLC and her house. Coleman made a gingerbread design with lots of frosting and decoration. Bud made a giant U and outlined it in red frosting. Lucky Santa! Because I am writing this after the fact, I can tell you Santa ate all of Rosie's cookie except the dot representing her home, all but a few crumbs of Coleman's cookie, and most of Bud's giant cookie. He drank the glass of milk we left out for him and he helped himself to a coke from the refrigerator. The reindeer crunched up the carrots we left out for them. I'm sure Santa enjoys coming to our house!

I have included two other photos in this post. The first is a picture Jono snapped of me reading the sports section of the paper. How funny! The other photo is of Bud, Rosie and Coleman before we went to Greg and Andrea's house for our Christmas Eve dinner. We bought Rosie's adorable reindeer sweater on sale in Hawaii. Not many girls need a warm, thick reindeer sweater in Hawaii!

All the Christmas Concerts

Christmas season means attending Christmas concerts! Coleman had a speaking part for his preschool program: "Outside your door is a Christmas wreath, and bright lights twinkle on every tree. People are smiling and pleasant, Christmas is lovely to see!" He did a great job with his part, but he didn't sing at all! I think missing four days of school right before the program played a big part in that. But, he sure looked handsome!

Rosie had a dance performance at Trolley Square. She was nervous because she missed her last practice for because of our vacation, but danced great. The whole concert was Christmas themed and very entertaining. Jono dropped us off at the door and after parking the car, crossed the street and bought us Banbury Cross donuts (the best in the world) to eat during the performance, yummy!

Bud and Rosie had two concerts at school. First, was the Owl Chorale (the school choir). Coleman and I met Jono there, I should have taken up Sara's offer to tend Coleman. He ate all his starburst snacks before the concert began and then kept grabbing my arm or sticking up his hand in front of the camcorder as I was filming, naughty! It was a very fun concert. The next week, each grade performed two songs. Coleman was better for this performance. I enjoy hearing the festive Christmas songs every year and thought of Grammy. She loves Christmas songs, too. Just one more Christmas away and then she will be right by my side listening to Bud, Rosie and Coleman sing!

It's Christmas Time

After returning from our Hawaiian vacation, we were ready to start the Christmas season! The first thing on our list was to get a tree; we wanted to buy a very tall tree to fill Grammy and Grandpa's huge foyer. We picked a beauty and the next day Jono decorated it in our usual Oettli style with lights and pinecones. Coleman put the angel on top and the tree was gorgeous! We also had a great time decorating the shelves around the living room fireplace with our Nativities, winter scenes, and stockings. We love Christmas!

Mele Kalikimaka!

We started off the Christmas season spending a week in our favorite place on earth, Hawaii! Three years ago we went the first week of December also, but we left Coleman home with the Ashbys and Grammy and Grampy. This time, we all went and had a wonderful time.

Jonny took us to the airport for our early AM flight, which went smoothly. The plane had a small TV for each seat with movies and games, and the kids also watched "Santa Buddies" on our mini DVD player. In no time at all, we got off the plane in paradise. We rented a car, drove to the resort, and were playing on the beach by mid afternoon! We ate dinner at the restaurant over looking the beach and the kids went to bed early (so did we). We stayed at the Ko'Olina resort on Oahu.

The next morning, we drove to the nearby town and ate breakfast at McDonald's. Jono loves to eat here in Hawaii because they serve Portuguese sausage and rice, a typical Hawaiian breakfast. Then, we shopped for food at a nice grocery store we discovered on our last trip. Our room has a full kitchen and dining room, washer and dryer, a family room with a sleeper couch for the boys and a cot for Rosie. Jono and I have our own room and we all share a big bathroom. We love to cook, and so we stocked up on groceries for the week. We bought lots of our favorite Hawaiian fruit; pineapple and papaya, yum!

The beach at our resort is perfect for families. It is a man-made cove with very small surf, we bought tubes for the kids and they floated all around. I brought a life jacket with us, which Coleman wore almost all the time. The kids also loved playing in the sand; burying each other and making sand castles. When we buried Bud, Jono wrote a "U" in the sand. When it was Coleman's turn to be buried, he wanted a "Y". Jono refused. The cove has a rocked wall on either end with black crabs crawling on the rocks and Rosie loved exploring for little shells.

We quickly settled into a daily routine. Breakfast in our room or at McDonalds and then we played at the beach until lunch. After a quick dip in the hot tub to get all the sand off, we ate ham, tomato and avacado sandwiches on french bread in our room. After, we when exploring other sites in the car or played in the waterfalls and waterslide at the resort swimming pool. Then, we would head back to the beach, which was our favorite place to be.

Most afternoons, Jono and Bud went golfing at the Ko'Olina golf course across the street. They both brought their clubs and had a great time on the beautiful course. One afternoon Rosie, Coleman and I walked over and played a few holes with them, we brought a few clubs for both of them, too. It was so fun for our whole family to be on the course together, reminiscent of the golfing trips Jono took with his family growing up. On our way back to the clubhouse, Jono was driving the cart and I was walking with Coleman. As Jono went by, Coleman ran to the cart to get in. Jono didn't see him and Coleman was knocked to the ground. He was not hurt, but he cried, "Daddy ran me over and didn't stop!" The kids had fun afterwards playing on the huge putting course near the clubhouse. Jono had all his favorite things in one place: he was in Hawaii, on a golf course, with his family!

In the evenings, we grilled at the outside barbeque or cooked dinner in our room. The kids went right to sleep every night after such a full day of fun activities! This was just when the news about Tiger Woods was breaking, and Jono and I watched it all unfold at night. The news from home was that the temperature was in the single digits, our Hawaii weather was 82 degrees and perfect!

Our favorite outing was Turtle Beach. It is a cove on the North Shore where turtles swim in to rest from the ocean. They come onshore and sit in the sun. It is so amazing to see these big turtles up close! During the week, Oahu had the biggest waves since 1969, and we saw part of the Quicksilver in Memory of Eddie Aikau surfing competition in Waiamea Bay. The waves in our resort also got bigger and the kids had fun playing in the surf.

One morning, we went to the Dole Pineapple Plantation and rode the Pineapple Express. Coleman loved it, he loves trains! Rosie whispered to me, "I'm bored". I said, "You are riding a train, in Hawaii, at a pineapple plantation, be excited!" The kids entertained themselves in the car by playing the alphabet game, a game we played on trips when I was young. They also did a little reading. We were lucky that their teachers excused them from school work.

One morning, we drove to the JW Marriott hotel adjacent to our resort and fed fish in the ocean. Then we walked to a beautiful beach nearby that the Pulsiphers told us about. It had many tide pools and a rocky plateau to climb on. The waves would crash onto the plateau and every once in a while, a giant wave would crash up and over, flooding the rocks with water. We all climbed up and Rosie and Coleman loved it when the giant waves would swirl around our legs. Bud, on the other hand, was so nervous and would grab onto Jono's shirt every time the waves hit!

Another Pulipher recommendation was to shop at the bi-weekly swap meet at Aloha Stadium. It was very fun! There were more booths of Hawaiian treasures than we had the energy or time to see. Rosie got two swimsuits, a turtle necklace, a backpack and bracelets for her friends. Bud got a t-shirt and sweatshirt, and Coleman got a swimsuit, t-shirt and puzzle. I got a swimsuit and Jono bought no-show socks, can you believe it!

I am used to spending the most time with Coleman, but everyone else was amazed at the amount of talking Coleman does in one day. He talks almost non-stop and is always asking "why?". I try to answer each and every one of his questions, and it is tiring by the of the day! One afternoon in the hot tub, Coleman started talking to an unsuspecting woman. He told her his name, his last name, spelled it for her, and his middle name. He told her his address and phone number. He told her how old he was, how old he will be turning, the date of his birthday, and what kind of party he wants to have. He told her the names of everyone in our family and that Jono and Bud were golfing. He started to tell her all the names of his friends when she decided to leave. He is a talker!

The only way home from Hawaii is the red-eye flight, which gives you one extra day in Hawaii. On our last night, the resort had a luau. The kids got Hawaii tatoos and tried to start a fire with wooden sticks. They also posed for pictures with very large Hawaiian dancers who taught Coleman the "hang loose" sign. On the flight home, the kids slept all the way. It was a fabulous trip!

On the golf course is a giant waterfall and pond. Jono and Bud threw coins in the water and made wishes. Bud wished for a scholarship to play basketball at the University of Utah and Jono wished to come back soon to Hawaii. Here's to wishes coming true!

Beauty Is...

... the Reflections Program. Bud and Rosie each created two great projects for Reflections this year. Bud took an awesome picture of the moon and made a fabulous film about the zoo using video and photos. He narrated it himself, I tried to add it to this post, but the file was too large. Rosie took a beautiful picture of flags at Olympic Park and wrote a sweet and quirky poem.

Beauty Is...
Beauty is the beach waiting for the happy children to play.
Beauty is the sunset bursting with reds, yellows and pinks.
Beauty is peacocks with bright colors parading all around.
Beauty is a garden with colorful flowers everywhere.
Beauty is all the toys made with love and care.
Beauty is every animal, with different shapes, sizes, colors and sounds.
Beauty is my house that is warm and cozy.
Beauty is a rainbow glowing after the rain.
Beauty is a butterfly spreading its wings.
Beauty is everywhere from the mountaintops to the deep blue sea!

Our elementary school had a record number of entries and so the judges had a lot of great projects to choose from. (Thank you to my sisters and sister-in-law for helping judge!) Bud won for his film about the zoo, unfortunately, Rosie didn't win. After shedding many tears, she made her own trophy. To us, they will always be winners!

The Big Game We Want to Forget

The outcome was not what we wished for, but the event must still be documented. Jono, Adam, Bud and I headed off to Provo hours before the Utah-BYU game, with high hopes and red beanie hats. The sun came out and we had a great time at the tail-gating Utah party down the street from LaVell Edwards Stadium.

Then, as game time neared, we separated into two groups. Jono and Adam ended up on the field beside the team, and Bud and I sat high up in the stands. By now you know the details of the game and have discussed the many things topics there are to discuss, so I'll skip all that. Just know the mood in the car on the way home was morose and mournful.

Somehow, against all odds, Coleman is a BYU fan. He says, "BYU rocks, Utah stinks!" The only way we could get him to wear this shirt is by telling him is says BYU Beat (and not the other way around). He finally saw the light, about half-way through our Hawaiian vacation. He announced at the beach, "I like Utah now!" We are so proud.
