Clara Barton and the Great Debater

Rosie recently completed a fabulous biography project about Clara Barton. She read books about Clara Barton and wrote a report about her life. She also memorized an oral presentation for the class History Fair and wore this cute First Aid apron that I made her. (I remember wearing a similar nurse apron that my mom made.) She did a great job on her presentation and was adorable as Clara Barton!

Bud has also been busy at work being a member of the 5th grade debate team. He choose to argue the negative side on the topic exporting renewable energy in Utah. His scores at the district debate qualified him to compete in the state debate tournament. At each debate he had had three rounds against three different debate teams. It's quite a process, and he was very nervous the days leading up to the debates. He did very well and we are so proud of him!

In other Bud news, he just completed his swimming and life saving merit badges. The challenging requirement in both badges was swimming to the bottom of a 9 foot pool and bringing a 10 pound brick to the surface and swimming in to the side of the pool. He had trouble doing it the first night, but after a pep talk by his dad, he completed the task the next night. Way to go Bud!

On a completely different note, this is a picture of Coleman and our cousin Connor. We were babysitting Connor, and Coleman wanted to give him some cheerios. Soon I had a floor covered with cereal and an empty family-sized box on the counter. I'm sure Connor had never seen so much cereal in his life; he was a very excited baby!

Happy Birthday Coleman!

Happy 5th Birthday to Coleman! I can't believe how fast the years have gone, every day is brighter with Coleman in our lives.

Coleman decided to have a train birthday party (no surprises there!). We had the party on the Saturday before his birthday and Coleman got to decorate his own cake, with a little help from Bud and Rosie. At his party, we ate pizza and played games outside with his cousins and friends. By the time we came inside to paint the crafts, Coleman was exhausted and lay on the couch (he had been sick earlier in the week, and was not fully recovered). Even so, the party was a success and very fun for all!

Sunday was his birthday and Coleman was so excited to open his presents. He got a disappearing mine shaft train piece for his extensive train collection, and an assortment of outdoor and swimming things.

The birthday boy!

Here are a few Coleman facts:

His favorite person is his cousin Brady, only he calls him "my friend Brady". They love to play and are sad when it's time to go. Once as I had to literally pick Coleman up to take him to the car, he yelled, "Brady, grab my foot". They are two peas in a pod! Coleman wants to marry Abby so that Brady will be his brother.

When it's bedtime, I will read books to Coleman but not lay down with him; and Jono won't read books, but will lay down with him. Coleman has figured this out and when we ask him who he wants to put him to bed, he picks me. Then, just as we finish reading books he says that now he wants dad to put him to bed and Jono will lay down with him. He's figured out how to get just what he wants.

On St. Patrick's Day, he threw up in my car on the way home from preschool. That is why there are no pictures from that holiday, Coleman threw up on his Leprechaun hat! A few nights later he threw up in the upstairs hallway, right after eating strawberry fruitsnacks. I have scrubbed and scrubbed the bright red stain, but I'm afraid it will be a permanent reminder of the Oettli era at Grammy and Grandpa's house.

Coleman's Papa Donut died, and he has been having dreams about him. In the dream, Papa Donut is saying, "don't die yet, Coleman." Coleman doesn't seem upset about the dreams, which is good. We have been discussing heaven, a lot, and about how Papa Donut is in heaven with Jesus.

Some of the endless questions that Coleman asks are (in his own funny words), "Why cats don't like water? Why are there no GO signs? Why is Bud the oldest? Why trees have different names?" I try to be the educational mom and answer every question to the best of my ability, but it can be exhausting!

When we say prayers before bedtime, Coleman likes to be very specific about how we word things. Instead of saying, "Bless that we won't have bad dreams" he wants us to say "Bless that we'll have good dreams". It's very, very important to him! Once when it was his turn to pray, he blessed everyone in our family except for Rosie. He explained afterwards, "She's mean to me."

He's very bright, he counted from 1 to 70 for his preschool teacher and knows simple addition problems. He'll say " Plus five plus three is eight and plus four plus four is eight!" He is learning sight words and likes to point them out in the Book of Mormon when we read in the morning. He exclaimed, "The scriptures have sight words too!" He memorized the first two Articles of Faith. Coleman know what colors mix together to make more colors and he loves to play games on the computer. When our Internet was finally restored after two weeks of not working, he played on it for hours, until his eyes were red and glassy and I made him log out.

Coleman's favorite food is any kind of red meat, honey nut cheerios, and pumpkin cookies without the chocolate chips. He dislikes asparagus and tomato soup. He loves to watch Mickey Mouse Clubhouse and Tom and Jerry. His favorite activities are preschool, library class, and Friday playgroup with his cousins.

He is very aware of where we are driving and has a good sense of direction, unlike me. Once as I approached an intersection, I slowed down then drove through. He asked me, "Why did you do that?" I replied that I thought it was a stop sign and was going to stop. He said, "Stop signs are octagons, that was a rectangle." Do you need to be corrected by your five year old as much as I do?

Coleman is such a blessing to our lives and we love him so much; happy 5th birthday Coleman!

Every Mother's Dream

Bud is reading Harry Potter #4 (it's over 700 pages long!) and Rosie is reading the first Harry Potter. She often reads with a British accent which she picked up from the movies. Coleman is reading a Thomas the Tank Engine book. Bud and Rosie also love to read in bed before falling asleep. We're proud of our readers!

Cheering on the Utes

I realize we are right in the thick of March Madness, but I never posted pictures of the last home game of the season at the U. We made it a family affair and headed up to the hill together, after dinner at the Training Table. Jono and Bud sat on the front row and had quite a different view of the game as the rest of us, we sat on the back row! The game didn't go as we hoped, but we stayed until the bitter end, cheering on the Utes!

Coleman is hardly ever up this late, and slept all the way home.
I put away his BEAT BYU t-shirt until football starts in the fall!

Hair Cuts

Jono is the barber for our family and every 6 weeks or so, the boys get hair cuts. He does a great job and will actually work for free!

This is a picture of Bud and Coleman mixing it up a bit before bed. Coleman is wearing Bud's glasses and pj's, and Bud is wearing (or trying to wear) Coleman's pull-ups and pj's. They are quite the sight!

Remembering Papa Donut

We lost our special Papa Donut earlier this week. It is so sad for us to say good-bye, but we are grateful that Jono was able to be with his dad when he died. We have had many great adventures with Papa Donut; fabulous golfing trips to Hawaii and Las Vegas, dinner at El Ferol, and eating donuts on Saturday mornings.

When Bud was young, Gordon came to our house every Saturday morning with a box of donuts and we sat at the bar and talked. Bud named him "Papa Donut" and the tradition continued for many, many years. We love you Papa Donut and will miss you very much!

Papa Donut loved Bud very much. He was proud Bud loves golf and does well in school. He promised to give Bud the red convertible when he turned 16.

Papa Donut had special feelings for Rosie, she's the first Oettli girl! He recognized her "free spirit" and said, "Oh Jono, I'm glad it's you raising her and not me!" He advised Jono to run credit checks on her prom dates. He wanted Rosie to be in the LPGA.

Papa Donut loved to be with Coleman, he was his little friend! After a hour of errands, he told Jono that he had never met anyone who could talk more than Coleman.
One week before he died, Papa Donut came over to watch golf
and sit by the fire, we were happy to have him in our home one last time.

Look What I Found

There is a parable in the New Testament about a woman who lost a coin and swept the corners of her house until she found it. I didn't actually lose anything, but was "sweeping the corners" of my house (by cleaning out all the closets and drawers) when I found (in my mom's cleaning supply bin) a package of steel wool pads. I was so excited! These are the best scrubbers around, but are no longer available to buy. The company had to stop making them because they are bad for the environment. You can't use them to clean everything, they will scrub the finish right off your sink or bathtub, but your pots and pans will sparkle when you clean them with steel wool. I wonder how old this package is, the handwritten price on the bag reads 79 cents. I feel like the woman in scriptures rejoicing about her newly found coin; I am thrilled to have 3 brand-new scrubbers!

On another cleaning note, Rosie got to be a lunch worker last week at school. She was on Cloud Nine, every morning, dreaming about which job she would be assigned. She spent a day as a table washer, a day handing out the lunch trays, a day serving corndogs (which is funny because she has always disliked hotdogs), and two days selling milk cartons for 30 cents each. Here is a picture of Rosie in all her glory!
