The Booger Wall and other Tales

I have been wanting to share a tale about Coleman and his room, (it's legendary with all the neighborhood children), it's... the booger wall! At night, when Jono tells Coleman a bedtime story, Coleman wipes his boogers on the wall above the pillows. (It's a don't ask-don't tell situation if Jono also wipes his boogers on the wall.) It has grown over the months and the story of its existence has spread. Rosie brings her friends into Coleman's room so they can all scream about how gross it is. Bud brings his friends into Coleman's room so they can say how cool it is. Bud has also taken Coleman into his primary class before it starts to tell the kids all about it. I didn't put the photo on my blog because it was too yucky!

Coleman continues to crack us up with his non-stop talking. The other day he stopped just long enough to say, "Listen, I can hear my eyeballs." Coleman and Bud were playing football and Coleman got hit in the nose with the ball. He took a deep breathe and exclaimed, "Don't worry, I can still smell!" He likes me to give him a piggy-back ride up the stairs. He holds on tightly around my neck and instructs me to hold him with "two hands on the bum". One day, mid-ride he said to me, "Piggy-back rides are the bomb!"

We ran errands last week and I was in the Toys R Us return line when I realized Coleman had disappeared. I took a lap around the store calling his name. An employee saw me and asked to help. I yelled, "His name is Coleman, he's four years old, wearing a black coat." Immediately, on the intercom came, "We have a code Adam, lost four year old, black coat, named Collin". After running all around the huge store, I found Coleman back where I started, explaining to the security guard his name was Coleman, not Collin!

I just got a new calling in the primary, I am in the presidency. During my first sharing time, Coleman was so happy to have me there, he ran up to hug me and kiss me on the lips--twice! He was recently the Special Speaker in preschool and gave a presentation all about golf. Parents are not invited, but the teachers told me he was awesome! He explained how you use each club,
scoring, fixing ball marks, marking the ball, and cleaning the ball. I'm sure he loved being able to talk and talk and talk. Last week it was his turn to be the class president. He was so excited! He got to point to the calendar to show the day, date and month, and he was a line leader. Oh, the great life that Coleman lives!

How Old is Too Old...

...for the tooth fairy? Apparently, not eleven! Bud pulled a tooth out at school, put it under his pillow that night, and the tooth fairy came. (Sometimes the tooth fairy forgets the first night, and Bud or Rosie have to put the tooth under their pillow again. Sometimes she even forgets the second night, too, and they have to try again a third night.) This time the tooth fairy came the first night and left Bud a five dollar bill. Bud said to me in the morning, "You're probably going to make me put this in my bank account, aren't you?"

I'm wondering if a certain movie coming out about the tooth fairy gave Bud a renewed belief. He has questioned in the past, you know, but not this time. Maybe if you thought the tooth fairy looked like this, you would believe too!

Our Holiday Weekend

Jono signed up to play in the St. George Amateur Golf Tournament over MLK weekend and we decided to make it a family affair. The kids had no school on Friday, so we left Thursday night. The only two things out of the ordinary about the trip down were that we stopped to eat, which we never do. Once Jono is in the car, he will stop for very little! The other thing that happened was an explosion in the car. "What was that?" we all asked. I turned around and there was dough all over the floor. Apparently there was a carton of crescent roll dough that had escaped the grocery sack and rolled under the passenger seat. Who knows how long it had been there, but the car finally got warm enough for it to explode!

The next day, Jono and Jon Morgan headed off early to the golf course. The kids rode scooters outside and then later we went to the Wildlife Museum. Bud calls it the museum of "stuffed stuff". It is owned by a wealthy St. George family who loves to hunt, and they keep what they shoot and have it stuffed. It is unpleasant if you think about it, but quite interesting to see the hundreds of animals they have from all around the world. Rosie didn't understand all this at first, she explained to Coleman that the owners love animals and take pictures of them and then make replicas out of fake fur. I didn't have the heart to correct her, but Bud set her straight.

We went home for lunch and then went swimming. I am not a fan of swimming in indoor pools, and am glad my kids are old enough to swim without me having to get in the water. I started reading "The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society". After having a great time swimming (we usually have the pool to ourselves, which is so nice), we went back to the house for dinner. Bud said, "That was such a fun day, what is left for us to do tomorrow?"

Jono came home late with exciting news; he was in second place in the tourney! Let me explain about amateur tournaments, they are very difficult and Jono hardly ever plays them, he prefers to play with a partner in a scramble. The young college golfers play in the amateurs and are very competitive players. Jono is an old man, compared to them, with a family and a job and not much time to practice. So, it was a very big deal that Jono played well enough to be in second place! We celebrated by eating the first strawberry shortcakes of the year.

On Saturday, after wishing Jono good luck, the kids and I went to Jumpin' Jacks, a place with blow-up jumpers and inflatable slides. It was fun for all, the kids ran around and got hot and sweaty for 2 1/2 hours while I continued to read my book, bliss! After lunch, the kids played outside again while I, you guessed it, read my book. Later, Jono got home and reported that he didn't play quite as well, but ended up tied for sixth place! We left Bud home tending and celebrated at the Pizza Factory.

The next day was a scramble, so Jono and Jon were partners. We found out later they took 3rd place. It was a successful golfing weekend! I took the kids swimming again and then to the park, and (yeah!) I finished my book (I loved it!). We really enjoyed the beautiful weather. It was nice to escape the smog in SLC. Coleman had been coughing quite badly at home, but could breathe asthma free in St. George.

The first day of our trip, I bought a pound of ham at the store, to eat everyday for lunch. The first day Rosie protested about eating the ham, but I made her choke it down. The second day she pleaded her case. She just finished reading "Charlotte's Web" for the second time and watched the movie again. She loves pigs and doesn't ever want to eat ham, bacon, or sausage again. Who does this remind you of? Me! After reading "Babe the Gallant Pig" I swore off eating pork, also. (I was in my twenties, at the time, and after several years, ate a ham sandwich that was so delicious I broke my vow.) Having experienced that for myself, how could I make sweet Rosie eat ham? I just gave her an extra slice of french bread and butter to make up for it!

It was a really great weekend!

Bud's Reflection Film

Bud's Reflection film won at the council level! (After you win at your school, your entry is sent to be judged against all the schools that make up your council.) We are so proud of him and recently attended an award's night with all the other winners. Bud's film was shown and everyone enjoyed watching it. If you have an extra 4 minutes and 39 seconds, you can watch it, too! (if you watch, go to the bottom of my blog and turn off the music so you can hear Bud narration)

I just got notice that Bud's film went on to win at the Region level, how exciting!

21

Our new favorite game for family game night isn't Clue or Monopoly; it's blackjack or 21, as we call it. (We have always done things a little differently around here!) It's actually quite educational, it teaches adding up numbers in your head quickly, if you can get past the fact you are teaching your young children to bet money while playing cards.

Jono is always the dealer. Sometimes Coleman is his helper. He says things like "place your bets" and "let's bankrupt everyone but mom!". Coleman also likes to play his own hand and makes the "hit me" signal every hand, even when he should stay.

Rosie is the lucky one at 21. One night, she got blackjack three times! Her motto is "bet big- win big", and she usually does. Bud, as you would expect, is a much more cautious gambler. I am very, very unlucky in 21 and often go many hands without ever winning. Come over and play anytime!

Winner, winner, chicken dinner!
