March Madness

... or Madness in March, if you are the NCAA trademarkers.  We filled out our brackets for the tournament like usual this year.  The college hoop experts Bud and Jono started out ahead, but were eventually passed by Coleman and Rosie who tied with 39 correct picks each, can you believe it!  Here is some more madness:

-Jono coached his own basketball team this month, Bud's deacon class in a double-elimination tournament.  He gave up playing in a golf scramble to coach, which is his favorite activity right now.  Unfortunately, our team lost both games.  Bud said to Jono when the score was 27 to 5, "Dad, you need to call time out and stop their momentum!"  Jono preferred to let the clock keep on ticking.  Bud just got made the Deacon's Quorum President and we are proud of him!

-Coleman walked in our home from church holding an empty beer can in each hand!  He had picked them up from off the street.  I didn't know what to do- grab my camera for a photo or grab the cans out of his hands and sterilize the beer germs off.  Scrubbing his hands came first, but I am sorry I don't have a picture of him dressed in Sunday best accessorized with beer cans.

-Rosie had the maturation program this month at school and was so excited for it!  We had a little talk about a week before and we went shopping and bought something that has three letters in it that girls are either dreading buying or begging to buy.  She was begging to buy it.  She came home from shopping with the biggest smile on her face and called Grammy to tell her the news.  I took of picture of this event, but am refraining from posting it on the blog.

-Soon after the maturation program and all the conversations in our home about it, Bud was wandering in the juvenille non-fiction section of the library.  He came upon books about this subject propped up for display.  He turned bright red and proceeded to turn them all over so the covers were face down, then quickly walked away.

-Continuing on with the maturation theme, Bud has grown quite a few more dark hairs on his lip and Jono kept saying he would help Bud shave them off.  I finally took matters in to my own hands and shaved off Bud's little mustache. It took about one minute and after Bud kept feeling his face over and over saying, "It's so smooth."  Coleman was fascinated with the big event.

-Coleman is having a geometry unit in math right now and learned about symmetry.  He now will only sit at the "symmetry spot" at the round table in our booth; which to him is directly across from the kitchen.  "(Technically with a round table anywhere would be symmetrical, but I'm not arguing a child who uses the word "symmetry" in everyday conversation.)

-Rosie was invited to a stamping night hosted by my sister Sara for the women in our family.  She had the best time and made lots of really cute cards.  It was National Pig Day this month and Rosie's teacher let her wear pigs ears all day at school and teach the class pig facts.

-Bud hung out with friends one Friday night and they were naughty!  They made bags of fake gross things and left them on a ninth grade girl's porch.  Then they smashed an egg on someone else's porch.  One of his friend's dad, who is the nicest man ever and probably never done one bad thing in his life, drove up looking for his son.  All the boys ran to his car, jumped in, and told him to drive away.  He unknowingly became the get-away driver!  He and I  laughed quietly about it at church two days later.

-Our family went shopping St. Patrick's day and Rosie wondered off looking at the racks of girls' clothes.  A few minutes later she ran back to me wearing a fur vest.  She begged me to buy it for her.  Next, we went to a sports store where she picked out the roller skates she wanted for her birthday.  I let her have them now, instead of waiting another month to use them.  She spent the rest of the day in her green shirt, faux fur vest, roller skates and helmut skating around in our circle singing to herself.  She is, as Papa Donut called her, a free spirit!

-Jono was on the news with this wonderful story about a forgotten time capsule, the first baby born in the year 2000 and a pass book from the bank.  If you missed it, here is the link  http://www.ksl.com/?nid=148&sid=19477872#.T1YtWt5vqMo.email

Coleman is Seven!

Coleman turned seven this week-- I wish I could stop the years from speeding by!  He is a numbers boy, so he has been tracking his age progression carefully all year.  First he was six, next six and one fourth, then six and a half. On cousin Brady's birthday, Coleman announced he was 6 and three fourths.  On March 21st ( a day he counted down to for the last month) he turned seven.

Just as meticulously as he kept track of his age, Coleman had his whole birthday planned out in advance.  He started the morning with Honeycombs for breakfast and I brought his class birthday donuts before lunchtime.  We had Domino's pizza for dinner, something he has always wanted but never had; because we always get the kids Little Caesar's pizza when Jono and I go out.  Luckily, the pizza lived up to his expectations!  After dinner he opened his presents.

We had a very fun family party on Sunday!  We served strawberry shortcakes, rice pudding (just because it is my favorite right now), ice cream cones and cookies.  A great time was had by all.  Basically the birthday celebrations can be summed up by this statement from Coleman, "I can't believe I'm seven years old!"

Jono and I recently found ourselves in a soon-to-be familar situation.  It was a Saturday night and Bud and Rosie were both with friends.  We had no baby sitter for Coleman, so we brought him with us to Market Street for dinner, along with Grandma and Grandpa.  We ordered him a hamburger from the kids menu, but he was more interested in my prime rib when our dinners came.  He soon realized that prime rib is better than a hamburger and ate a fair amount of my meat!  He constantly asks when we are going back.  We filled out March Madness basketball brackets in our family and the winner is going to come down to Rosie or Coleman.  Coleman wants his prize to be dinner at- you guessed it- Market Street!

Coleman is always happy and always up for adventure.  He loves to play football and basketball with Bud and Rosie, watch Scooby-Doo and play on Bud's ipod.  He loves school and is still a mathematical guru.  He knows how to regroup in addition and subtraction, can multiply and divide (he really loves division) and he just learned how to multiply double digits.  His favorite books right now are the Frog and Toad series.  They are divided into chapters, which he thinks is so cool.

We love Coleman so much!!
