Falling Water

On Tuesday morning Jono and I left the kids at home with Grammy and drove 90 minutes to Falling Water. It is the most famous house designed by American architect Frank Lloyd Wright, built in the late 1930's. It was commissioned by a wealthy Pittsburgh family as a weekend home in the mountains. The property had a beautiful waterfall and the family assumed Wright would design the house so the waterfall would be in view from the house. Instead, Wright designed the house on the waterfall, so that the family would actually live with the waterfall. It was amazing!

The house had equal parts indoor and outdoor living space, with fireplaces in almost every room. Instead of walls, there were windows that opened up to allow the outside in. Wright also designed all the furniture and furnishings, the design is still fresh and contemporary for today, seventy years later. I couldn't take pictures inside, unfortunately, but it was beautiful. Jono and I loved touring this house, it was very inspiring.

Back in Pittsburgh, Grammy and the kids had their own adventures. They went to Trax Farm, Giant Eagle and Arby's. The boys got Pittsburgh Pirate hats at Giant Eagle (a grocery store) and Rosie got a can of cheese spray. She could not believe that cheese came in a can and could be sprayed out on crackers (or directly in her mouth). I think she was more excited about her purchase than the boys were about their hats!

When Jono and I returned, we all went to Simmon's Farm to buy produce. Jono loves to buy produce and was in fruit and veggie heaven. We bought corn on the cob, tomatoes, blueberries, watermelon and a pie. Then, the kids went to an animal pen on the property to pet various farm animals. It started to rain and so we had to leave. The kids were very disappointed, especially Rosie, who was holding a baby goat.

After a yummy dinner with all our fresh food, we went back to the farm so the kids could play with the animals again. Just as we pulled up it started to rain again! Instead of petting animals, we went to Home Depot and bought 9 mouse traps. (Can you appreciate the irony?) Grammy feeds the squirrels, chipmunks and bunnies in her backyard, and a large family of mice decided to join in the nightly buffet. Grampy and the kids had a great time setting up the traps, especially one trap called the "electric chair".

So far we have not caught any mice, but we continue to feed the critters morning and night!
