An Oettli Update

It's time for an Oettli Family Update!  I'm starting with Coleman, he is such a funny kid.  He likes to say, "Oh crud!" when something bad happens.  He calls nachos "machos", turkey "tarkey", and scissors "seesors".  He recently gave his first prayer in Primary.  He was a little nervous, but did a great job.  After his prayer, Rosie gave a talk. Coleman was sitting on Jono's lap in the back of the room and he yelled to her, "I can't hear you Rosie, I can't hear you!"  Then, a member of the Bishopric spoke.  Coleman asked Jono what the man's name was and then yelled out again, "I can't hear you Brother Campbell, I can't hear you!"

Coleman got his hair cut really short for summer.  Jono cuts his hair and it is torture for Coleman to sit still covered in hair, he hates hair.  I heard him crying in the tub the other day; he was tubing with Rosie in my bathroom.  I went to investigate and he was cowering in the corner and Rosie was teasing him with several strands of hair.

Coleman is still really interested in numbers.  He has several books where the story counts backwards, like "Five Little Monkeys".  He makes me turn to the back page and read the story backwards so that we are counting the right way.  Coleman also loves to talk.  He talks all day long, non-stop.  He is a chatterbox!

Remember when Bud was little and he started saying a swear word?  It was so funny, but we tried hard not to laugh and not to make a big deal, so he would not say it anymore.  Well, Coleman has started saying a different swear word and it is so funny, but we are trying not to make a big deal and to teach him not to say it anymore.  The first time he said it, Jono, Coleman and I were in a parking lot in our car and Coleman said, "Hi jack***" to a man walking to his car!  After I got control of my laughter, I said to him that it is a bad word and we shouldn't ever say it. He started to whisper the word, and I told him again he can't say it anymore.  He told me, "That's OK, mom, I just say it softly."  The worst part is when I asked him where he learned it, he said, "You mom!"  I must admit I often think that word about Jono, but I don't say it aloud. Maybe Coleman can read my mind.  He said it again the next day in front of the kids and they were hysterical with laughter and shock.  It's been almost a week without any swearing from Coleman, so cross your fingers that he's forgotten all about it.

Coleman started off a series of accidents in our neighbor's yard.  First, the next door mom carried a crying, crumpled Coleman home to me.  He had fallen off the monkey bars.  A few days later Rosie came home screaming, she had fallen off the tramp.  Days after that, Bud came home crying.  He, too, had fallen off the tramp!

Here's a picture of Coleman eating watermelon in the sink, he's warming up after flooding the sandbox, a favorite activity around here.

Next up is Rosie.  She's the girl who, when she likes something, becomes obsessed with it.  She went through a nacho stage and ate at least one plate of nachos a day.  I bought giant bags of tortilla chips and huge blocks of cheese at Costco to keep her happy.  Her latest cravings are for waffles.  Luckily, Costco also sells large boxes of waffles and big bottles of syrup.

Rosie has learned so much at school this year.  Once I asked Rosie how she knew the meaning to word in a story.  She answered, "I knew it from the context clues."  Coleman recently said, "I'm going to scream my eyes out" and Rosie said excitedly, "That's his first idiom!"  Last week Rosie had an especially good day at school, she got 100% on her spelling pretest and won the poster contest for Sun Week.  She was so happy!  That contrasts the day I forgot to sign her planner.  One day, out of an entire year I forgot to sign her planner, and it just happened to be on her birthday.  She cried for at least an hour that night.  She will still break into sobs to this day if I bring it up.

Anytime Rosie coughs, sneezes or aches a little, she is sure she has the swine flu.  She loves her new pink golf clubs, pink golf shoes, pink golf balls and pink tees.  We have been golfing quite often this spring.  She has learned many of the golf rules and etiquette, and can make her own club selection.  She even had her first par at Fore Lakes CC!

Here is a picture of her dressed for a 50's party at school.  She is wearing a scarf from Grandma Mimi around her neck.

The last update is Bud.  He is getting so old and big.  He asked me to buy him some deodorant and I gave him an extra stick of Jono's.  He couldn't decide if he should put it on at night after his shower or in the morning before getting dressed.  I think he decided to do both.  The other morning I asked him if he was ready to leave for the bus stop.  He answered, "Teeth brushed, deodorant on, bed made!"

In fourth grade, you study the counties of Utah.  Bud recently had a test and he got 100%.  He learned all of them at school, he didn't even study at home.  He also spelled them all correctly.  The kids' school has a full time dance teacher and Bud hated it when his class went to dance.  The whole school put on an end of the year concert and Bud had to dance with a girl!  They were the lead couple in the Virginia Reel and he had an embarrassed smile on his face the whole time.

Bud is a boy who is always hot and sweats a lot.  He likes his hair really short and has been begging for a summer buzz cut.  Jono gave him a buzz and Bud looks very cute, and he is already quite tan.  Coleman wants to be just like Bud and requested a haircut "like Buddy's hair".

One day, when Bud was walking home from the bus stop, he heard the ice cream car.  He ran home for money and bought a cold snack for Coleman and himself.  They sat in the shade and relaxed for a while.

We are excited to start our summer adventures!

Great post. They are all funny kids but I think Coleman and the swearing had me laughing the hardest.
